Twinkies, Root Beer and God
By Larry Durr
A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of root beer and he started his journey. When he had gone three blocks from home, he met an elderly man sitting on the park bench feeding some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the man looked hungry, so the boy offered him a Twinkie. The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at the boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Again the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted!
They both sat on the park bench all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man and gave him a big hug. The man gave him the biggest smile ever.
When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so Happy?” “He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, the little boy added, “You know what? God’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”
Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy and contentment, returned to his home to find his son at the door with a look of peace on his face. The son asked “Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy and with such a smile?” He replied, “I ate Twinkies and drank root beer in a park with God today.” However, before his son responded, he added,” You know, he’s much younger than I had expected.”
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, and honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn “A Life” around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
Embrace all equally!
My name is Jeff Metcalf,
I have been doing Cowboy Church Services for Renea Bolling at some of the Barrel races the last few years and she has graciously ask me to write from time to time on her web site Barrelbash.Com web page, its called “Fence Post of Faith.” It is a story in itself for later. I want to just ask everyone to thank Renea, not just for her faith in the arena as a great competitor but her faith out side the arena. Can you remember where you use to run your horses before Barrel Bash’s came along? Where were we able to run 3 days, good ground, good facilities spread over 7 or 8 different states. Just thank Renea next time you see her. Enough said. I will leave you with one more thought.
Don’t squat with your spurs on, to do your thing, and always Drink up stream from the herd.
